PasswordSafe - Store and protect sensitive information about your accounts
If you have one or two email accounts, remembering their passwords should not be a problem, but if you have four email addresses, a Facebook and a Tweeter profile and a few bank accounts, then it would be wise to write them down. Password Safe lets you store your passwords in a secure database, which can only be accessed with another password. Instead of remembering dozens of account details, you only need to remember one master password.
Password Safe's setup file can be downloaded quickly, even with slower Internet connections. While going through the setup process, you can choose to install it regularly or in disk-on-key mode, which will not write anything in the Windows Registry.
The software lets you create more than one database. Before loading the main interface, a window will appear on the screen, where you can either create or load a database. The master password must be specified immediately after creating a database. When the interface is loaded, you can start saving your sensitive information right away.
Your accounts can be saved as entries in a tree menu. After clicking the Add New Entry button on the toolbar, you can type the account's title, username, password, notes and more. Additional options can be found under different tabs on this window. They will allow you to set an expiration date for the password or configure shortcuts for copying the username, password and other information. You can also set a password policy regarding its length, what types of characters to use and so on. You can either set your own password policy or use the default one. When specifying an account's password, the program can use this policy to generate a random password.
Accounts can be organized in different groups, which can be created like folders on the tree menu. If you select an account, you can use the options on the toolbar to copy the username, password or notes to the clipboard. This feature can be very useful if someone is standing behind you when logging into an account. For extra security, the toolbar also contains an option for clearing the clipboard. If you specify a URL, when adding an account, you can go directly to the sign in page by clicking a toolbar button. An auto-type option is available as well. You just have to click the username field, on the sign in page, click the auto-type option on Password Safe's interface and the login information will be inserted automatically.
Pros:
You can store any information about an account. The software's features allow you to insert login information without typing it. It is also possible to install a portable version of Password Safe, so you can take your databases with you.
Cons:
When creating groups in the tree menu, it may be a bit confusing at first.
Password Safe will store and protect sensitive details from any account. Its smart features and portability make it an ideal tool for protecting valuable account information.
